PRIMARY RECORD
Who is the responsible authority?
Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). The CAI country record describes roles, requirements and stages, but must be rechecked before a real application.
Hague Adoption Convention in force since 2003-10-01 according to the CAI country record.
Authorities and process
CAI identifies CARA as India’s central adoption authority. For applicants resident in Italy, the authorised Italian organisation submits the dossier through the appropriate process. It is not a direct application to a public list of children.
Eligibility and important caveats
CAI summarises Indian rules on joint spousal consent and applications by single people, while Italian eligibility requirements still apply. OCI and NRI categories must be confirmed with CARA and the authorised organisation; Indian ancestry alone is not evidence of guaranteed priority.
What is distinctive about this country
CAI describes CARA’s no-objection certificate, the district magistrate stage, travel documents and Italian authorisation for entry. Statutory steps are not a personal matching forecast. A child’s first language cannot be inferred from Indian citizenship alone.
A legal country profile does not prove an organisation is taking new families. Historical totals cannot predict individual waiting times or matching. Confirm with a competent authority and an authorised organisation.
Historic figures, not current openings
A separate CAI historical dossier records completed and pending 2025 procedures for this country. Those figures are historical and do not count children awaiting families.
