PRIMARY RECORD
Who is the responsible authority?
Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (ICBF). The CAI country record describes roles, requirements and stages, but must be rechecked before a real application.
Hague Adoption Convention in force since 1998-11-01 according to the CAI country record.
Authorities and process
CAI identifies ICBF as Colombia’s central authority. It oversees intercountry procedures and assessments within the Colombian system, including regional involvement. An authorised Italian organisation remains the bridge for applicants habitually resident in Italy.
Eligibility and important caveats
CAI notes that Colombian law allows single-person adoption in relevant circumstances. That does not grant automatic acceptance; Italian eligibility, the authorised organisation’s current mandate policy and Colombian rules all require individual verification.
What is distinctive about this country
CAI’s first-half 2026 update reports a recovery in Colombia-related activity compared with the equivalent earlier period. That trend cannot predict a family’s waiting time: it is an aggregate observation over a limited window. Current eligibility and programme status still require specific confirmation.
A legal country profile does not prove an organisation is taking new families. Historical totals cannot predict individual waiting times or matching. Confirm with a competent authority and an authorised organisation.
Three questions to ask before proceeding
- Which age and marital-status rules apply to the intended route?
- Which Italian organisations are genuinely operating in Colombia today?
- What visits, stays or meetings are required by the current process?
